ProMembrane International Conference in Sfax, Tunisia (4-6 May, 2008)

This International Conference constitutes the most relevant event held under the project ProMembrane, a Specific Support Action (SSA) financed by the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) of the European Union, under the Specific  Measures in Support of International Cooperation (INCO) with Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPC).

CBS has successfully organised this event along with the International Congress on Biotechnology also in Sfax, Tunisia from the 4th to the 8th of May 2008, which provided ProMembrane´s event a higher impact.

The Conference was great success in enhancing the public awareness (several media reported) and in enhancing the university-industry links. A panel of well known experts from 14 countries attended the thematic ProMembrane conference with presenting plenary lectures, and oral communications. The large number of researchers and industrial representatives from several EU and non EU Mediterranean Countries as well as the exhibition of professional equipment for water treatment by international companies clearly demonstrated the necessity and the success of the event.

The aim was to attract the maximum number of actors in the field and to provide them a common platform for scientific exchanges on new ideas and latest research works in the field of Membrane for water and wastewater treatment in the Mediterranean Region. For the promotion of the event, all information available has been uploaded in the website and included in the flyer that will be distributed among the research centres, networks, universities in the Mediterranean region, including European countries.

The conference scientific programme included lectures from members of ProMembrane consortium and from international guest speakers, presentations from the six scientist selected in the contest Young Scientist Award (three from the Middle East and three from North Africa), panel discussions, poster presentations and a stand exhibition. The Conference has also had the occasion to award the prize (600€) for the first place of the Young Scientist Award Region A and Region B.

It was of great importance that the ProMembrane International Conference was organised along with the International Symposium on Biotechnology with 700 participants from 37 countries. MENA countries participants had the possibility to attend to the ProMembrane lectures, keynote and oral contributions in the field of environmental technology of more than 20 invited speakers from the different parts of the world. On the other hand, ISB participants expressed a big interest in the

ProMembrane Scientific lectures provided by eminent scientists invited such as Prof. Gilbert RIOS (France), Prof. Nidal Hilal (UK), Prof. Enrico Drioli (Italy), Dr Tom Arnot (UK), Dr Gerhard Schories (Germany), etc. The proceedings of the ProMembrane International Conference have also been prepared by CBS and distributed to all participants (including those from the ISB 2008).
